About Mayfly Ink

About me
Designer. Tinkerer. Maker.

I'm a multi-disciplinary designer and creative technologist specialising in developing products and experiences for start-ups, scale-ups, and innovation/R&D teams. With 20 years of experience, I've helped global clients develop innovative solutions — spanning digital products, software, hardware, and human experiences — across a broad range of industries.

Grounded in Proprioception Design and Pragmatic Design, my approach navigates uncertainty by transforming nebulous, complex ideas into tangible, innovative products and experiences. At Mayfly Ink, I strive to create beautifully crafted products featuring intuitive interactions that deliver delightful utility through dynamic and contextually aware experiences.

My extensive experience and foundational knowledge provide the basis for effectively integrating AI tools into my practice. I use these tools as a force multiplier to extend my design and development capabilities and unlock new opportunities for innovation.

Location
I'm based in the Coal Coast Illawarra region between Sydney and Wollongong and have all the tools, resources, processes and enthusiasm to productively collaborate with teams from everywhere.

Method: Proprioception Design
Drawing inspiration from the body's innate sense of self-awareness and position (proprioception), Proprioception Design is a methodology focused on creating products and experiences that feel intuitive and empowering. The goal is to enhance a person's sense of agency, competence, and connection with their environment. It aligns with a Pragmatic Design approach, recognising design as a craft centred on creating products with both physical and emotional utility, and shaping the experiences people have with them. Central to this approach is designing with situational awareness, embodied cognition, and reflective practice. The methodology emphasises learning by doing, showing a bias towards building and testing prototypes early, accepting uncertainties in the development process. Proprioception Design consolidates elements from established product development practices like human-centred design, design thinking, intervention design, lean UX, and agile principles.
